Why Work Out with a Friend?

Why Work Out with a Friend?

Breaking a sweat with a friend or loved one may do more good than you think. When you commit to working out with someone else, it often makes it easier and more fun to fit fitness in your life. If you exercise with your significant other, it may even enhance your relationship. Research shows that doing new things together can produce feelings similar to when you first fell in love, as your brain is flooded with feel-good endorphins.

Here are 6 good reasons to find a workout buddy:

  1. You’ll have more fun. Spending time with friends is usually fun no matter what you do. Heading to the gym or a fitness class together can be fun, too. As an added bonus, you’ll fit in socializing and fitness at the same time.
  2. You’ll feel accountable. Knowing someone is relying on you will make you less likely to skip your workout. This is especially helpful for those early morning workouts when you’d like to hit the snooze button instead of getting dressed.
  3. You’ll be more motivated. Sharing the ups and downs of working out with a friend pushes you forward. Seeing your friend make progress towards her goals will motivate you to keep reaching towards yours.
  4. You’ll work harder. We tend to find our competitive streak when we’re participating in an activity with someone we know. Find someone who can keep you on your toes and you’re likely to push yourself harder than you would if you were going it alone.
  5. You’ll avoid boredom. Let’s face it, a solo stint on the treadmill can get old quickly. But throw in a buddy and you’ll be looking forward to your sweat sesh so you can catch up on the latest gossip or make plans for an upcoming vacation.
  6. You may save money. Some classes and gyms offer special deals when there’s more than one person joining. If personal training is your thing, you can split the cost and share in the benefits.
