These Fun Outdoor Activities Keep You Fit

Throughout the summer months, you likely look forward to spending more time outdoors. But the season isn’t just about enjoying more hours of daylight and warmer temps – it also means you can find lots of fun things to do outside that will get your heart beating and your body moving, even though they don’t feel much like exercise.

If you’re looking to fit in some fitness while having some fun, consider these outdoor activities:

  • Hopscotch – Playing a game of hopscotch with the kids can be a fun way to get your body moving. The hopping and leaping will help build muscle strength. Landing on one foot will improve your balance. And bending to pick up your “potsie” will improve flexibility. Plus you’ll probably have a few good laughs along the way!
  • Hula hooping – You can burn about 400 calories an hour or more, according to the American Council on Exercise, when you grab a hula hoop and move your hips. The activity strengthens muscles in your core, legs and arms and also helps improves balance, flexibility and coordination.
  • Frisbee – If you’ve ever watched two people toss a Frisbee, you know there’s more to the activity than simply standing in one place and waiting for the disc to fly through the air and into your hands. In addition to the arm motion you need to launch the Frisbee, you’ll need to run, stretch, jump and dive to grab the disc when it’s heading your way.
  • Hiking – Walking on the treadmill may seem like work, but when you’re outside enjoying the scenery you likely won’t mind working up a sweat. Hiking is good for your body – it can build muscle strength, boost bone density and lower your risk of heart disease. It’s also good for your mood.
