Living with a chronic lung condition brings daily challenges, but it doesn’t have to stop you from doing the things you enjoy. While you may not be able to reverse any damage to your lungs, you can take steps that help you breathe easier, stay healthier and feel more in control. Here are seven practical tips that can make a difference if you’re living with a chronic lung condition:
- Don’t skip your medications. Your doctor may prescribe inhalers, pills or other treatments to help you breathe more easily. Taking them as directed is one of the most important steps in controlling your condition. Skipping doses can make symptoms worse and raise your risk of flare-ups. Keep medications handy and consider setting reminders so you don’t miss a dose.
- Learn breathing techniques. Simple breathing exercises, like pursed-lip breathing or diaphragmatic breathing, help improve airflow and ease shortness of breath. These techniques are useful during physical activity or when you feel anxious about not getting enough air. Practicing them daily can help you stay calm and in control when breathing becomes difficult.

Staying current with recommended vaccines helps protect you from complications and reduces the chance of ending up in the hospital. Ask your doctor which shots are best for you.
- Follow a balanced diet and stay hydrated. Healthy eating supports your immune system and overall energy. For some people with COPD or emphysema, smaller meals throughout the day are easier to manage than large ones. Drinking enough water can also help keep mucus thin, making it easier to clear from your lungs.
- Stay connected with your care team. Regular check-ins with your healthcare provider are key to catching problems early. Pulmonary rehab programs, which combine exercise, education and support, can also be life-changing. Don’t hesitate to bring up new or worsening symptoms with your doctor. Staying proactive can help you breathe easier and live more comfortably.
