6 Tips to Nip Spring Allergies in the Bud

Spring is a season of blooming flowers, warmer weather, and unfortunately, allergies. If you find yourself sneezing, sniffling or dealing with itchy eyes every spring, you’re not alone. The good news is that there are simple ways to manage your symptoms so you can enjoy the season.

Here are some effective tips for making allergy season more manageable:

  1. Know your triggers. The first step in tackling spring allergies is understanding what causes them. Common culprits include pollen from trees, grass and weeds. Check local pollen counts online or through weather apps so you can plan your activities on days when levels of your primary triggers are lower.
  2. Stay indoors during peak times. Pollen levels are typically highest in the morning and on windy days. If pollen triggers your allergies (like it does for most spring allergy sufferers), try to stay indoors during these times. If you need to go outside, wearing sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat can help reduce your exposure.
  3. Keep your home allergen-free. Making a few changes at home can help reduce allergens indoors. This includes things like closing windows and doors to keep pollen out, using air purifiers with HEPA filters to trap allergens, washing bedding regularly in hot water to remove pollen and dust, and vacuuming frequently with a vacuum that uses a HEPA filter.
  4. Practice good hygiene. After spending time outdoors, take steps to keep allergens from sticking around. Change your clothes when you come inside. Shower and wash your hair to rinse away pollen so it doesn’t wind up on your pillow. Also, wipe pets’ paws and fur to keep them from bringing pollen into the house.
  5. Manage symptoms early. Don’t wait for allergy symptoms to get bad. Start using over-the-counter allergy remedies like oral antihistamines or nasal sprays before allergy season kicks into high gear. If you have severe allergies that aren’t improved by using over-the-counter medications, talk to your doctor about prescription options or allergy shots.
  6. Try natural remedies. Some people find relief from allergies with natural remedies like saline nasal rinses or using a humidifier to keep the air moist. While these methods may not work for everyone, they can be a helpful addition to your allergy-fighting plan.

Spring allergies don’t have to keep you from enjoying the season. With a little planning and the right tools you can minimize your symptoms so you can focus on what makes the season so special.
