Millions of people fall every year.
In fact, falls are the leading cause of injuries and injury-related deaths in older adults (age 65+), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
People of any age can fall, but this video includes 7 tips to help make it less likely you won’t:
- Pay attention. Avoid distractions and look at what’s in front of you so you’re more aware of obstacles in your path.
- Don’t rush. Give yourself enough time to get where you need to go.
- Exercise. Do activities that improve strength, flexibility and balance such as Tai Chi, yoga or water workouts.
- Remove hazards. Keep pathways at home clear of objects. Get rid of loose rugs or secure firmly to the floor.
- Store items in reach. You’re less likely to lose your balance if you don’t have to stretch, bend or climb to retrieve items.
- Lighten up. Add more lighting, brighter bulbs, motion sensor lights or nightlights so you can see where you’re going.
- Use safety devices. Use non-slip mats in showers and tubs and in front of sinks. Install hand rails and grab bars where needed.
