Video: 7 Tips to Prevent Slips and Falls

Millions of people fall every year.

In fact, falls are the leading cause of injuries and injury-related deaths in older adults (age 65+), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

People of any age can fall, but this video includes 7 tips to help make it less likely you won’t:

  1. Pay attention. Avoid distractions and look at what’s in front of you so you’re more aware of obstacles in your path.
  2. Don’t rush. Give yourself enough time to get where you need to go.
  3. Exercise. Do activities that improve strength, flexibility and balance such as Tai Chi, yoga or water workouts.
  4. Remove hazards. Keep pathways at home clear of objects. Get rid of loose rugs or secure firmly to the floor.
  5. Store items in reach. You’re less likely to lose your balance if you don’t have to stretch, bend or climb to retrieve items.
  6. Lighten up. Add more lighting, brighter bulbs, motion sensor lights or nightlights so you can see where you’re going.
  7. Use safety devices. Use non-slip mats in showers and tubs and in front of sinks. Install hand rails and grab bars where needed.
