Each year, more than 5 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with heart valve disease.  Heart valve disease refers to conditions that prevent one or more of the valves in the heart from functioning properly.  These valves —aortic, mitral, pulmonary, and tricuspid — ensure proper blood flow through the heart and to the rest of the body.  The valves in the heart can malfunction and have a narrowing of the valve opening, limiting blood flow or an incomplete closure, causing a valve to leak.
