The heart beats about 100,000 times each day, continuously supplying blood to the body. Sometimes the timing of this hard-working pump malfunctions. Heart rhythm disorders, arrhythmias, occur when the heart beats in an abnormal rhythm — too fast, too slow or in an irregular pattern. Symptoms of arrhythmias include shortness of breath, weakness, fainting and heart palpitations. And some arrhythmias will not cause any symptoms. Heart rhythm disorders may lead to stroke or cardiac arrest. Diagnosis and management are key to managing arrhythmias. Treatment includes medication, procedures and devices to help the heart regulate beats.
In this episode, KYW’s Rasa Kaye speaks with Raffaele Corbisiero, MD, Deborah’s Division Director of Electrophysiology and Pacing. Dr. Corbisiero discusses the future of heart rhythm care.
Advances in arrhythmia care include pulsed field ablation, leadless pacemakers, new mapping and imaging techniques, remote monitoring, wearable technology and device therapy. Dr. Corbisiero shares current clinical research in arrhythmia treatment, the benefits of minimally invasive procedures, and early interventions to treat heart rhythm issues.
