Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) with Medtronic PulseSelect™

Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a new, non-thermal technique used to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib). It uses high-amplitude pulsed electric fields to effectively destroy abnormal heart cells without the heat damage associated with traditional ablation methods. PFA is considered a promising alternative to traditional ablation techniques like radiofrequency and cryoablation, offering potentially quicker recovery times and fewer side effects.

How does it work?

PFA utilizes a catheter with electrodes that deliver rapid bursts of electrical pulses to the heart tissue. These pulses create small, temporary pores in the cell membranes, leading to cell death without significant tissue damage or inflammation. This process effectively disrupts the electrical signals causing the arrhythmia.

Am I a good candidate for treatment?

PFA is typically considered for patients with symptomatic AFib that has not responded well to medications or other ablation techniques.

What can I expect after treatment?

The success rate of PFA for AFib appears to be comparable to traditional thermal ablation methods, with success rates greater than 70% with a single ablation. Recovery times are generally shorter, with many patients able to return to normal activities within a few days.
